N-N-N-NETFLIX!

The days are getting shorter... the nights are getting colder... and that means one thing for my husband and I: movie-time!  As you probably know, we don't have satellite or cable hooked up to our TV, so historically, we have either purchased TV series on DVD or rented movies to get us through those long, cold winter nights.  This year however, things are going to be a little different.  Not wanting to break the rules, we haven't bought any of our favorite series on DVD and while we have rented a few movies, we find it a bit of a pain given how far we live from town... plus, our DVD player is broken.

At first, we decided to download (and purchase) a few shows from iTunes... man those things are expensive, plus they take up a ton of space on your comupter and take for-e-ver to download.  In case you were wondering, I find this to be within my 'rules' because it doesn't involve the purchase of a physical 'product', therefore I think it fits more within the category of an 'experience'.  Same goes for music.  That being said... I am still a bit of a cheap-o, and as I said, those things are really expensive!  So, we have come up with a new solution: Netflix!

For those of you who don't know, Netflix is a website that streams a wide variety of movies, documentaries and TV shows (oh, and streaming = no waiting!).  You can sign up for a one month free trial and then pay only $8.99 per month thereafter.  In case you didn't do the math, that is less than renting two movies... at least it is where I come from.  Sooo, we have decided to give it a shot.  The best part is that there are a TON of independent films, documentaries, foreign films, etc. which is right up my alley!  (and NO, I am not being sponsored by Netflix to talk in such a positive light about them!)

So, if you haven't done so already, sign up for netflix!  At least for the one-month trial.  And when you do, check out 'Who Killed the Electric Car'... it is a documentary about the rise (and FALL) of the electric car in America.  It is an absolutely fascinating show (although it is quite disheartening...but, you won't be surprised to learn of big buisness/political corruption now will you?)

Happy movie watching!

Marebare xoxo

PS... if you know of any related documentaries that I should check out let me know.  If you are so inclined, I would also be happy to post full reviews of any of these movies on here as well.

  1. I am SOOOOO with you on this one! I have become a total Netflix junkie! It's like getting to watch the good stuff all the time... with no commercials, no waiting, and no hassle. My queue is filled with documentaries, and it has decided (based on my ratings) that I like "Dark, Fight the System Documentaries." It makes me laugh every time I read that!

We ended up signing up for the slightly more expensive package so we could get BluRay DVD's (this is my boyfriend's thing... personally I can't see the difference.) I decided a few bucks a month wasn't worth a fight, so we generally get feature films on Blu Ray and watch them when he comes over... the rest of the time it's me and my "dark" preferences!

OK... so here are some documentaries that I have really enjoyed lately:

-Guns, Germs & Steel (National Geographic version of Jared Diamond's Pulitzer Prize winning book - Be careful, the episodes are out of order... It should go Spanish Conquistadores, Then Tropics, then Africa)
-Collapse (National Geographic version of Jared Diamond's other book - OMG is this one good! But you should watch Guns Germs & Steel first if you haven't read the books.)
    -King Corn (LOVED this film!)
    -Food Inc
    -No Impact Man (of course!)
-Maxed Out (not sure if that one has the same impact in Canada because it's about US lending practices... downright horrifying)
-The Future of Food (the inside story on GMO food... prepare to be terrified)
    -Blue Gold: Water wars
-Capitalism: A Love Story (I Love Michael Moore)
    -The Age of Stupid
    -Everything's Cool
-A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash
    -America the Beautiful

OK... I could go on, but I'll spare you. I'm sure Netflix will start suggesting things based on your ratings.

BTW - after my hard drive crashed, I took the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 which comes with Windows Media Center. It totally ROCKS! It has a Netflix interface that is designed for TV browsing. So the computer is hooked up to the TV and my boyfriend got me a cool Wii-like remote control that works with Media Center... so now we can easily browse Netflix from the couch. It is the height of indulgence!

OK, I'll shut up now... have fun!

  2. I don't watch much TV... but I thought these shows were fantastic:

    Sharkwater
    BBC Planet Earth Series
    Super Size Me

    Cheers!

  3. @ Rebecca: Thanks for the long list... although as with most things Canadian, we are behind the 8-ball on this one. We have a very limited listing compared to the US of A... I have confidence that it will keep growing though and I plan to watch many of your suggestions!

@ Cheryle: Thanks hun! We must have similar taste b/c I have seen (and own) the planet earth series (which I love) and I thought Super Size Me was brilliant (and yet disgusting at the same time!)

I guess I have 94 days left until I can make that purchase hey?
